We CAN Respectfully Disagree June 11, 2010

We CAN respectfully disagree. Look at Tony and Peggy Campolo.
Tony is a well-known Baptist minister who believes that gay Christians are called to lifelong celibacy.
His wife Peggy disagrees, and supports her gay friends and their marriages.

This reminds me of reading that Arnold Schwarzenegger is a conservative, while his wife, Maria Shriver, is a liberal.

COME ON PEOPLE. We can talk about issues without getting all hostile, AND without questioning the “salvation” of those with whom we disagree.

In case you are interested, here’s more on the debate among gay Christians, and the views of Tony and Peggy Campolo, plus
a couple of essays that respectfully oppose each other.

Tony is more nuanced on this [I mean more detailed]
read on this a few years ago…[re him and wife]
not sure of the depth of detail his wife actually believes
obviously your main point should go without saying – for all who truly want to discuss

I, too, would think this point should go without saying, but wow, I’m amazed at how many people can’t handle disagreements. Me and some of my closest friends don’t see eye to eye on lots of things, but we know how to love and respect each other within all that. The past 10 years have seen a lot of changes in some of my beliefs. I used to be pretty fundamentalist, but I never realized how down-right hateful most fundamentalist Christians can be when they have their beliefs challenged. Even many who I’ve considered close in the past just freak out if you don’t believe every piece of theology the exact way they do. It’s actually sad, scary, and, well, discouraging sometimes.
But, I’m learning, as Brian McLaren said, to try to “share with those who get it, or want to get it. And to not bother, OR look down upon, those who don’t.”
Sorry, didn’t mean to get on my soapbox. Thanks for stopping by.
      Be blessed.
